The Science Behind Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy uses controlled exposure to very cold temperatures to trigger short-term physiological responses in the body. Whole-body cryotherapy has become especially popular for exercise recovery, soreness, and general wellness, but the science is more nuanced than many marketing claims suggest. Research supports some short-term effects—particularly around pain and perceived recovery—while many broader longevity claims remain under investigation.

What Happens to Your Body During Cryotherapy?

Exposure to extreme cold causes blood vessels near the skin to constrict, reducing peripheral blood flow as the body works to preserve its core temperature.

Cold exposure also activates the sympathetic nervous system and can influence nerve conduction, pain perception, inflammatory signaling, and other physiological responses. These mechanisms help explain why people often report feeling temporarily less sore or more refreshed after a cryotherapy session.

Whole-body cryotherapy differs from cold-water immersion because the body is exposed to very cold, dry air rather than cold water. The two approaches create different cooling effects, and current evidence does not suggest that whole-body cryotherapy is automatically superior to more traditional recovery methods.

Cryotherapy and Exercise Recovery

One of the most studied uses of cryotherapy is recovery after strenuous exercise.

Cold-based therapies may reduce muscle soreness and temporarily improve how recovered someone feels after training. A 2026 meta-analysis comparing cold-water immersion with body cryotherapy found that both approaches may support post-exercise recovery, although cold-water immersion appeared more effective for short-term delayed-onset muscle soreness.

This makes cryotherapy potentially useful as a recovery tool for active individuals, but it is important to distinguish reduced soreness from accelerated tissue healing. Research has not established that cryotherapy directly repairs damaged muscle or makes the body heal faster.

What About Inflammation?

Cold exposure can influence inflammatory pathways, which is one reason cryotherapy is frequently associated with recovery and wellness.

Studies have observed changes in inflammatory markers following whole-body cryotherapy, but results vary depending on the population, treatment protocol, frequency, and outcome being measured. Researchers continue to investigate whether repeated cryotherapy sessions can create meaningful long-term changes in systemic inflammation.

For now, cryotherapy is better viewed as a supportive recovery modality rather than a treatment that universally “eliminates inflammation.”

Can Cryotherapy Support Longevity?

This is where claims should be treated cautiously.

Cold exposure is scientifically interesting because it creates a temporary physiological stress that forces the body to adapt. Researchers are exploring connections between cold exposure, metabolic function, inflammation, stress responses, and other biological processes relevant to healthy aging.

However, there is currently much stronger evidence supporting fundamental longevity strategies such as regular exercise, healthy body composition, cardiovascular fitness, adequate sleep, good nutrition, and appropriate preventive care.

Cryotherapy may complement those habits, but it should not be considered a substitute for them.

Is Whole-Body Cryotherapy Safe?

For many appropriately screened individuals, short cryotherapy sessions may be well tolerated, but exposure to extreme cold is not risk-free.

Published literature has documented adverse events associated with whole-body cryotherapy, and the FDA has noted that whole-body cryotherapy devices have not been cleared or approved for treating medical conditions. Risks can include cold-related skin injury and other complications, particularly when equipment is used improperly or an individual has medical factors that make extreme cold exposure inappropriate.

That is why screening and appropriate supervision matter.

Where Cryotherapy Fits Into a Recovery Plan

The most useful way to think about cryotherapy is as one tool within a broader recovery strategy.

Training load, sleep, nutrition, hydration, mobility, stress, and overall health all influence how effectively the body recovers. Cryotherapy may help some people manage soreness and feel ready for their next workout, but it works best when those fundamentals are already in place.
